Raychem RPG (P) Ltd, incorporated in 1989, is a 50:50 joint venture between TE Connectivity (US) and RPG Enterprises (India). The company offers a wide range of electrical equipment to both utilities and industrial customers. Raychem RPG is organised into distinct strategic businesses, delivering solutions across various business segments and serving clients in domestic and international markets. The major business units, EPD (Energy Domestic) and EBU (Engineering Business Unit), faced significant issues in its operations, including high inventory levels, long order lead times, low reliability, large order backlogs, and high expediting costs. These issues contributed to a decline in profits and a substantial drop in Return on Capital Employed (ROCE). The company partnered with Vector Consulting Group with the objective of releasing capacity in operations to reduce lead times by improving operational output and reliability, without any additional investment. By implementing ‘pull’-based processes in its supply chain, EPD division was able to align raw material (RM) availability and the kitting function, reducing lead times, improving On-Time In-Full (OTIF) of orders, and lowering inventory levels. Similarly, in the EBU division, actions like implementing ‘pull’-based manufacturing methods on the shop floor and in planning, undertaking capacity exploitation steps with critical vendors, and launching the Vendor-Managed Inventory (VMI) program for key vendors, resulted in a quantum jump in output and enhanced reliability to customers at reduced lead times. Significant benefits from the implementation were realised in just the first four months of its implementation. These results were achieved despite the company, like everyone else in the industry, faced challenges posed by the COVID-19 lockdown and its aftermath. Some of the salient results are shown in the following table.
