The huge 1,500+ New Product Development (NPD) team, operating from globally benchmarked testing facilities at Ashok Leyland Ltd, continuously strives to bring vehicles synonymous with safety, reliability, and ruggedness to market. The objective of R&amp;D is to respond quickly to customised market needs across diverse platforms and to develop many new platforms in the intermediate, mid and heavy segments of both the bus and truck business units (due to intensified competition), to sustain and improve market share. Moreover, meeting regulatory deadlines (government and industry) is a matter of survival for the business. However, the need to adhere to rigorous internal processes, the involvement of a large number of suppliers (both international and domestic), and the involvement of several approving government authorities make this environment extremely challenging. So, like most highly complex R&amp;D environments, the team struggled with frequent rework, delays in parts development and lower-than-expected output. After applying the Flow Management principles across the entire development funnel, rather than focusing on individual projects, the team broke out of a vicious loop of delays and capacity wastage.
