Despite the buzz, modern trade still accounts for only about 10% of FMCG retail in India.&nbsp;And now, we have quick commerce, a new player promising grocery delivery to your doorstep in just 10 minutes. So, how did we get here?&nbsp;Quick commerce — also known as the younger, faster cousin of e-commerce, took off during the COVID lockdowns. With people stuck at home, it became safer and more convenient to order essentials online. Delivery platforms adapted quickly, reducing delivery times from 30 minutes to 10 minutes.&nbsp;So, how does quick commerce work? Enter dark stores, small warehouses in high-density neighborhoods, serving a radius of about 2 kilometers. These dark stores are stocked based on consumer buying trends, replenished frequently to ensure freshness, and optimised for speed and efficiency.&nbsp;The secret? It's data and local intuition. Every click or search you make on a quick commerce app is tracked to predict demand. If a product doesn’t sell well, it’s quickly delisted to make room for more in-demand items.&nbsp;Another game-changer was the rise of UPI payments, which made online transactions seamless. UPI transaction volumes skyrocketed during this period, further fueling the growth of quick commerce.&nbsp;India’s quick commerce market grew from $0.5 billion in FY22 to $3.3 billion in FY24 — a staggering 6X growth in just two years. And it’s expected to triple again, reaching $9 billion in the next 3-4 years.&nbsp;So, how does quick commerce stack up against kirana stores (neighborhood grocery/mom-and-pop stores)and modern trade?&nbsp;Kirana stores (neighborhood grocery/mom-and-pop stores) excel at high reach, offering a good product range and reasonable prices. They are deeply embedded in the fabric of Indian society and serve as a real-time barometer of consumer tastes. Modern trade excels in product range and competitive pricing but struggles with reach, often due to high rental costs and inventory challenges.&nbsp;Quick commerce, however, seems to hit the sweet spot — very high reach, a good product range, and competitive prices. It’s perfect for moments when you realise you’re out of milk or need a snack.&nbsp;But here’s the catch: quick commerce thrives on impulse buying. It’s designed for consumers who don’t have the time to walk to their nearest kirana stores (neighborhood grocery/mom-and-pop stores). However, it’s still not a replacement for planned purchases, where kirana stores (neighborhood grocery/mom-and-pop stores)continue to dominate.&nbsp;Now, let’s talk about the challenges.&nbsp;Setting up a dark store costs around ₹90 lakhs, and operating costs — like delivery, manpower, and logistics — are high. Platforms lose money on orders below ₹600, and the average order value often falls much lower.&nbsp;To offset these costs, platforms have started charging delivery fees, especially for smaller orders. This is ironic, as quick commerce was originally built on the idea of impulse ordering!&nbsp;Additionally, while quick commerce is growing rapidly in urban areas, it’s struggling to make an impact in smaller towns. Why? Because semi-urban consumers aren’t as time-strapped as their urban counterparts.&nbsp;Even in urban markets, quick commerce faces significant challenges. Every minute of delay in the promised 10-minute delivery results in a drop in active consumers. And with high operating costs, platforms are struggling to achieve profitability.&nbsp;So, what does the future hold for retail in India?&nbsp;Quick commerce platforms are exploring new revenue streams, such as promoting D2C brands on their virtual shelves. These brands need visibility, and quick commerce offers an ideal go-to-market strategy.&nbsp;But don’t count kirana stores (neighborhood grocery/mom-and-pop stores) out just yet. They’re evolving, too—offering better assortments, walk-in experiences, and even home deliveries.
