Australian and American miners have faced similar geological challenges and invested in continuous mining technology, dragline optimisation, and advanced overburden management systems. Rail freight rationalisation, dedicated freight corridor extensions to coastal industrial clusters, and targeted subsidies on domestic coal logistics; even a fraction of the foreign exchange saved on reduced imports would fund this many times over. <h2>The larger stakes</h2>In a world reshaped by the Russia-Ukraine conflict, where Europe is rebuilding its entire energy architecture from scratch, and where every major economy is racing towards energy sovereignty, India's continued dependence on imported thermal coal is not just an economic inefficiency; it is a strategic vulnerability. Every dollar spent on Indonesian or Australian coal is a dollar that funds someone else's economy, fluctuates with a currency we don't control, and can be disrupted by a policy decision made in Jakarta or Canberra.  India has the reserves. India has an industrial demand. What remains is the will to connect the two, systematically, boldly, and with the kind of long-term infrastructure thinking that turns geographical constraints into competitive advantages.  The coal is already in the ground. The rivers already flow in roughly the right direction.
