Problem: Operations across sectors like manufacturing, and services need help to align fluctuating demand with capacity (also often variable). This variability can lead to inefficiencies and customer dissatisfaction. Solutions: The solution involves strategically using capacity, inventory, and time buffers. Capacity buffers handle sudden demand surges, inventory buffers smooth supply-demand discrepancies, and time buffers balance customer wait times with service delivery. Benefits: Strategic buffers stabilise operations by absorbing demand-capacity mismatches, enhancing customer satisfaction through managed expectations, and supporting long-term operational efficiency. Effective buffer management improves financial health and competitive positioning by allowing agile market responses.
